Fulfilling a life long dream of following in the wakes of some of the giants within sailing and adventure, is one that I could only ever dream of. The re-enactment of the 1968 Golden Globe Race in 2018 allowed many peoples dreams become a possibility, GGR2022 is when it becomes my reality.
Sailing around the world non stop, unassisted with only technology found in 1968 permitted onboard is a challenge only few have accomplished. As of 2019 just over 200 sailors have circumnavigated the globe along the same route, half of them without stopping and a fraction with no navigation technology or outside assistance.
A mental challenge as well as a physical one. Being isolated for nearly 300 days takes its toll on anyone. This duration is unknown to me and one of my prime fears knowing my family are at home unable to make contact as we please. The sailors who have endured this challenge have either found peace or torture. I foresee only positives coming out the other side as you are pushed to the limit of human endeavour.
Why do I want to do this?
This is not only joining a race, this is joining a family of sailors who come together to reach the summit of a sport, not only as competitors but as friends. The reach of the GGR2018 touched millions of people around the world, myself included. Reaching the finish line is the obvious goal, but the journey has so much to offer.
Follow me as I prepare myself, my boat (soon to be purchased), my team and my family as we tackle the first major challenge, getting to the start line. We are determined to make it all the way around and I want to share it with you all. Hop onboard and let’s go for a ride together.
